Occupational Therapy (OT) For Regaining Function

Whether caused by injury or disease, the role of an occupational therapist is to provide support to the patient in order to work through their physical, neurological, and/or cognitive limitations to return to a maximum level of function. Occupational therapists also educate clients on preventative care to address   mobility loss and facilitate more active lifestyles through the development of fitness and/or wellness programs.

Anyone who has experienced any of the following may be a good candidate for occupational therapy:

  • Loss of balance
  • Slip and fall
  • Trouble walking
  • Joint pain
  • Back pain
  • Hip or knee replacement
  • Stroke
  • Heart failure
  • Heart attack
  • Decline in overall physical function
  • Difficulty dressing
  • Difficulty eating meals
  • Decline in memory

Occupational Therapy for Everyday Activity in the Anchorage Community

The role of an occupational therapist is to focus on a patient’s ability to perform a variety of Activity of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activity of Daily Living (IADLs). By improving the skills required to do everyday tasks or teaching new skills to work around limitations the occupational therapist facilitates improvement in overall function, performance, and independence.

A thorough evaluation is performed in order to create an individualized treatment plan at the beginning of care. This treatment plan will focus on improving function and independence using active modalities and passive modalities to help the patient achieve their personal goals. Factors such as a patient’s physical ability, psychological state, social well-being and various environmental factors will be taken into account when developing this individualized treatment plan.
